This article, part of CommScope's "Definitions" series, explains passive optical networks (PON) and how they power modern networks.
In today's fast-paced digital world, efficient, reliable network infrastructure is crucial for seamless connectivity. One of the key technologies that enables this is the Passive Optical Network (PON). But what exactly is PON, and how does it work? Let's dive in.
A Passive Optical Network is a type of fiber-optic telecommunications network that uses unpowered (passive) optical splitters to distribute a single optical signal to multiple endpoints. Unlike active optical networks, which require electronic devices to boost and manage signals, PONs rely solely on optical components, making them more energy-efficient and cost-effective to operate.
In PON, a central device called an optical line terminal (OLT) is located at the service provider's central office. A single fiber-optic cable runs from the OLT to a passive optical splitter, which divides the signal into multiple paths. These paths then connect to optical network terminals (ONTs) at the end-user locations, such as homes or businesses.
The passive optical splitter is a key component of the PON. This splitting process is entirely passive, meaning it does not require any external power source.
